about

This is a 12-Track Analog production on a 4-Track Yamaha MT 100II Tape Machine. This is where and how the original 'Dub Factory' sound was first developed. 'HOMAGE TO THE MAROONS (A Story Set To Song)' tells the story of The Jamaican Maroons, captured African people from the regions now called Ghana, Congo, Nigeria west and central Africa who successfully and rightfully fought for and defended their freedom once reaching Jamaica. The British were building their 13 colonies of what would soon become the United States. They were battling the Spanish for control of Jamaica which was at first a Spanish colony. The British won Jamaica and intended to use it as a sugar production and enslaved persons breeding colony but had no control over the free African communities up in the mountains. They were bringing in more 'free labor' but they really desired to go in and recapture the maroons who were living in newly established communities in the rugged mountainous interior of Jamaica and creating a sense of DREAD among the colonists, unexpectedly sweeping down from the mountains, conducting raids for weapons on the prisoner work camps (what some people call plantations) and taking more captive Africans to live in freedom up in the mountains. The Maroons soon realized the importance of women and children to their numbers. In the mountains the Africans intermingled with the remaining Arawak people who had also fled to the mountains during the Spanish occupation. The Arawak showed the Africans where and what all the medicine plants were. From an ancient time these indigenous Tiano people called the Island 'Xaymaca,' (meaning "Land of Wood And Water or Land of Springs") which is where we get the name 'Jamaica'. Guess what? The Maroons Won!! defeating the elite british forces in an 80 Guerilla war, and anything and anyone the British sent in after them. They were "treatied' into a "slave catcher' role which some say they never really honored. To this day, the African Maroon Communities live autonomously, self governing high up in Jamaica's rugged mountains. Later on, the 'Buru' drumming traditions (said to originate in Congo) were passed down to the Rastafarian Culture. This is where we get the Nyabinghi riddim heard in Roots music to this day . . . Their story had to be TOLD, so I was inspired to tell the story thru song and arranged a 12 part orchestration on an Analog 4 Track to the deepest and most unorthodox, uncompromised Reggae sound imaginable. Iniversal Storytelling to the Universe :)
